Melbourne’s World Trade Centre complex on the north bank of the Yarra looks like a work in progress. The former, temporary site of the Casino has a retail part which is being renovated. There are office buildings and apartments as well as the Victoria Police headquarters and museum.

Lovely presentation of the gluten-free platter for two

In this mix of space beside the river you’ll find a few restaurants making good use of the view. (From here, South Wharf and Docklands look good!) One of these restaurants is Byblos, with beautiful decor and an extensive menu, both Lebanese inspired.

I have mixed feelings about thick menus. Sometimes people find them confusing, especially if they aren’t familiar with the cuisine. The good thing about a menu like the one at Byblos is that you can mix and match, go for share plates or individual mains, or if you’re in a large group opt for their set meals and add a skewer here or an entree there.

In our group of eleven adults (and one baby) we went for the shared platters (for two), and added a mixed grill for the odd member out. The quality of the food is high; the presentation beautiful and social media worthy. A minor quibble I had is with one of the mocktails, which was made up beautifully on a previous visit – but was rather plain when I recommended it to my friends. The service has been fantastic both times I was here – attentive but not intrusive. Large groups can be hard, and our server and her colleagues were patient.

Fresh, high quality ingredients in the batata harra or spicy potato salad (left) and the tabouli (right).

Tasty lamb cutlets in the custaleta, served with baked potatoe kebbi (a Lebanese shepherd’s pie).
